Blog Post 15: Religious Freedom v. Actual Freedom

Over the past year, many states have introduced certain laws that apparently stand to protect people’s “religious freedom.” These laws include “bathroom bills,” which are laws dictating that people must use the bathroom matching the gender they have on their birth certificates. Other “religious freedom” laws allow for businesses to pick and choose those that they serve, often at the expense of customers who are of the LGBT community. While people should have the right to practice religion freely, it should not come at the expense of others. The “religious freedom” laws have been responsible for countless reports of mistreatment and abuse endured by minorities. Religious freedom laws take away actual freedom by those affected.
